Guide

Get started with DummyDrop

From install to your first filled form in about a minute.

1. Install

DummyDrop works in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Brave, which all run Chromium extensions. It is installed from the Chrome Web Store. Microsoft Edge may ask you to allow extensions from other stores the first time. It is free. Firefox and Safari are not supported.

The Chrome Web Store listing is coming soon. This page will link to it as soon as it is live.

When you install it, the browser lists what DummyDrop can do. It does not ask for access to every website: see Permissions for each item and why it is there.

2. Pin the icon

Click the puzzle-piece Extensions button in the browser toolbar and pin DummyDrop so its icon is always one click away. You can use the keyboard instead: Alt+Shift+F opens DummyDrop.

3. Fill your first form

  1. Open a page with a form, for example a sign-up page you are testing. Click the DummyDrop icon or press Alt+Shift+F. The first time, three short welcome screens explain the basics.
  2. DummyDrop lists the fields it found, each with its detected type. Hover a row to see that field outlined on the page. Untick anything you do not want filled.
  3. Press Fill selected. The ticked fields are filled, a message tells you how many, and nothing is submitted.
  4. Not what you wanted? Press Undo in the message, or Undo last fill at the bottom, and the fields return to exactly how they were.
If a row's type looks wrong

When DummyDrop is unsure it shows a type menu in the row. Choose the right type and it is remembered for that field on that site.

4. Make a profile (optional)

A profile is a complete identity you can fill in one click, such as "Test User 1".

  1. Open the settings with the gear icon, then Profiles, then New profile.
  2. Type the values you want (any you leave empty get dummy data), and tick Use as the active profile.
  3. Back on a page, press Fill profile, or press Alt+Shift+G to fill everything without opening DummyDrop. The number of fields filled shows on the toolbar icon for a moment.

5. Keep it open (optional)

A popup closes when you click elsewhere. To keep DummyDrop on screen, press the pin button at the top of the popup, or tick Keep DummyDrop open in the settings, then choose Side panel or Floating window under Where it opens. The floating window is a draggable icon and window that can fade while you point at a field. The guide explains both.

When DummyDrop stays open, a tab you have not clicked on shows Click the DummyDrop icon on this page. That is the browser's rule: it gives an extension access to a page only after you click its icon there. For sites you use all the time, the shield button lets DummyDrop work without that click, after you approve it once for that site.

6. Shortcuts

Alt+Shift+F opens DummyDrop. Alt+Shift+G fills every detected field with your active profile.

To change them, open chrome://extensions/shortcuts (or edge://extensions/shortcuts, brave://extensions/shortcuts) and set your own. If another extension already uses a shortcut, the browser leaves it unassigned and you can pick a different one there.

If something does not work

  • The icon does nothing, or says it cannot scan this page. Browser pages, the extension stores, PDFs and (until you allow it) local files cannot be scanned. Try an ordinary web page.
  • A form inside an embedded frame is missing. Frames from other sites need an Allow access step. See Support.
  • A field was skipped. Every skipped field shows its reason in the message. Common causes are a character limit shorter than any valid value, or a dropdown with nothing selectable.

More answers, and how to report a problem, are on the Support page.
